strike a pose by Robert-Eede strike a pose by Robert-Eede
This is a Hornet , I've wanted to take a photo of one of these for years. The 1st and only time I have had the opportunity to take a photo of one was 2 years ago, I set myself up, was just about to take a photo and it flew off !!

When I take photos with such high magnification, I try to brace myself on something firm, use mirror lock up (Which stops mirror slap ) And I also always hold my breath to minimize any movement for the sharpest possible image. I don't use a tripod for macro work as they are slow and cumbersome(by the time I set it up, whatever I was photographing has moved and probably had babies by then!)
This specimen was captured at great dixter garden in Sussex. It had damaged wings so it couldn't fly, it also posed for me beautifully

Thank you, yes this was taken using the mpe-65mm 1-5x macro lens. My favourite macro lens I own  :)

They are expensive but I think that they have outstanding image quality.

I wouldn't recommend this macro to o a beginner though as they are a very specialised lens. At least you can use say a 100mm macro lens as a portrait lens as well, with this it is only macro.
They are more much more difficult to use as they don't have any auto focus . Not that I am suggesting you are in any way a beginner  :)

Also doing this with the 5DS R, I would guess this is even more difficult to get a clean sharp picture.
But yes, I would call myself something not so far away from a beginner :)

I think that judging by your work , you have a great understanding of the fundamentals :)

I have found that using my new 5ds-r has been fun and the noise performance  that many people have been banging on about is very similar to the 5d mkiii that I also owned. it just doesn't go as high as the 5d mkiii.:happybounce: :happybounce: :happybounce:

I really love my 5ds-r AND Canon 65mm 1-5x macro lens.

I welcome and appreciate your kind input

I've also heard a lot of good things about the 5d mk III, and I was thinking about changing to one, but I think that I will save some money and wait for the 6d mk II with the dual pixel raw and that it will hopefully be a bit cheaper then the 5d mk IV :)

The 6d mkiiii should be really good, and maybe better than the 5dmk4 in low light too. 🙂

great patience. I know how it feels to finally capture a nature shot after years of trying-waiting-only to have it fly off, the wind ruin or other uncontrollable factor cause another postponement.
It is a very sharp ,clean shot too. Lots of great details show up that a person would never realize were on a hornet or wasp's head (face? )

Thats why I love macro shots, I feel like an explorer because I can discover new things whenever I am out shooting macro  :)

This is just incredible. The scale of the detail is astonishing, and as a human, you can't help but muse about what else you're missing, seeing and thinking so relatively big.
